Since taking my first darkroom course in the sixth grade, photography has been a passion of mine. I took that passion and threw it into obtaining my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, focusing on photographic arts.
Immediately following my graduation in 1988, I became the associate photographer for a well-known editorial photographer. At 22, I was photographing and styling home interiors and gardens for national interior design publications. My work has been published in magazines such as: House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens, HOME magazine, Country Gardens, Country Living, Woman’s Day and many others. My travel photographs have also appeared two consecutive years in the National Geographic Traveler calendar. While I still have a passion for travel photography, general portraiture (especially kids) and my editorial work, I have found that I particularly love telling the story of the biggest event in someone’s life: the Wedding Day.
My background in the editorial style of photography gives my work a particular edge. I love telling a story with images. I love telling the story of a wedding day. This approach is best described as wedding photojournalism. Many couples that I meet with, although wanting a photojournalistic style, express concern that they won’t get the formal portraits of family and friends who have come a long way for their wedding. Although the telling of the story is my focus, I realize the importance of the formal portrait. So I try to get a feel for what would be most appropriate through my meetings with you, the style of the venue, and the feel of the day.
The family portraits and portraits of the bridal couple can go from extremely casual to very traditional and formal. Aside from this, the block of time for the portraiture, I’m invisible and your day is yours to enjoy. As one couple put it: “You were everywhere and nowhere at the same time.” This, by the way, is the essence of wedding photojournalism. It is literally telling the story of your wedding day with pictures and it’s being able to doing so from a completely unobtrusive approach and candid view.
I’m very happy to have the pleasure of sharing in so many wonderful memories with all of my couples. It is a joy to do what I’m doing and I hope to have the opportunity to share with you in your day. |
